Unused storage on a server

Why a server keeps an application's data after you remove or move it, how long it's kept, and how to restore it or free the space now.

Unused storage on a server

When you delete an environment or move an application to another server, strackt doesn't erase its data straight away. The data stays on the old server for a grace period, so a mistake can be taken back. After that, strackt cleans it up for you.

While a server is holding data like this, its page says It is still holding unused storage, and the server shows up in your dashboard's attention list.

How long the data is kept

What removed it You're notified after Scheduled for cleanup after
You deleted an environment or moved an application 7 days 14 days
A preview environment closed along with its pull request 1 day 3 days

Preview data is kept for a shorter time because it's recreated when the pull request is reopened. It's kept for three days and then removed. Reopening the pull request creates a fresh preview.

When the notice period passes, you get a notification saying how long the data has been unused and how long until it's cleaned up. You get another once it has been removed. See Notifications.

See what's being kept

  1. Open the server.
  2. In the overview sentence, choose unused storage. This opens the Unused storage card.

Each row shows the application the data belonged to, with the environment's name for anything other than production, how much space it uses, when it was found, and how long is left before cleanup, for example 5 days left or cleans up today. This works the same on every server.

Restore the data

If the environment still exists — for example, you moved the application to another server — choose Restore on its row. The environment is attached back to this server, together with its data. The server then has a pending change to pick this up; see Server pending changes.

If your workspace has used its included application, restoring an application that isn't currently attached to a server asks you to subscribe first. The message says where: from the application's page, attach it to this server and the storage is used again. When that isn't possible for the application, the message says to contact support instead.

If the data is being deleted at that moment, for example because you chose Delete now or its cleanup time just arrived, Restore and attaching the application are refused for a few minutes. Try again shortly.

If the application was removed completely, there is nothing to attach the data back to. The row says The application was removed, so only its data remains, and Restore isn't offered. You can delete the data now or leave it to be cleaned up.

Free the space now

To reclaim the space without waiting for the grace period:

  1. Choose Delete now on the row.
  2. Confirm with Delete now.

This permanently removes the data and can't be undone.

Right after you delete an application, Delete now can answer that the storage is still being released by the deleted application. The data is kept; try again in a few minutes.

Only the workspace owner can restore or delete unused storage.
